The John Glenn wrestling team finished up as a regional finalist and the number nine ranked team in state. Individually, five guys qualified for the state finals.
Senior Sadiq Sheikhmeeri wrestled for two seasons and qualified for the finals finishing in the top 16 of the state.
“I have been wrestling for two years at John Glenn and my first time wrestling as an individual and I made the state qualifier, “ Sheikhmeeri said. “The reason I make it to state is because I believe in working hard, believing in myself that I can do it and another reason is my Coach Shamir Garcia, and thanks coach Polk for pushing me! It was great to be part of this team.”
Junior Ty Cowen finished in the top 16 as well and has over 100 varsity wins at the point. Cowen is now a two-time state qualifier.
Senior captain Charlie Kersten battled hard all year and also finished top 16 in the state finishing with over 100 career victories.
“Throughout my four years at John Glenn I have seen many things. While on the wrestling team I saw kids treat kids that they had no clue existed at the beginning of the years, like family by the end,” Kersten said. “Everybody has potential in this sport as well. I worked with people that I had never even seen and met, but they put time and effort in to achieve the goals they want and in the end I was very happy with the team I was leaving behind. I can confidently say that they will do great next year.”
Junior Josh Mars finished his sophomore year with nearly 100 wins and is now 2-time All-State, finishing 8th in the state. And lastly, senior captain Shawn Brown finished his wrestling career with almost 150 wins and All-state honors finishing 5th in the state.
In an email, Coach Polk said, “These young men represented John Glenn and the Wayne Westland community school district with class and honor and I am happy and I am very proud of them.”
